Cuddalore
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE : With incidence of chikungunya on the rise in Cuddalore district, particularly in the past three weeks, the Communist Party of India has urged the State Government and the district administration to make the primary health centres functional round-the-clock. In a representation made to the Government, district secretary of the CPI T. Manivasagam noted that till the disease was brought under control, the number of medical personnel in Government hospitals should be increased. He also suggested deployment of mobile medical teams to render services at the doorsteps of the afflicted persons. He called for launching a campaign to create awareness among the people on precautionary measures and the kind of treatment to be taken. Mr. Manivasagam observed that in the absence of any structured medical treatment, and due to lack of accommodation in hospitals to admit in-patients, the disease seemed to have spread. Many patients were thus forced to go to private hospitals, even though they could hardly afford to do so, he noted. With a view to attract the attention of the authorities on the need for combating disease on a war footing, the CPI would stage a demonstration in front of the Government Headquarters Hospital here on November 21.
