KDA seeks statutory powers

Special Correspondent

`This is needed to ensure that Kannada is used in the administration'

GULBARGA: Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority Siddalingaiah on Friday urged the Government to accord statutory powers to the authority for the effective implementation of Kannada at all levels in the administration.

Addressing a press conference here after conducting a review meeting with the heads of the government departments on the status of the implementation of Kannada in the administration, he lamented that the authority with limited recommendatory powers was not in a position to take punitive action against officials who failed to implement the directions of the authority.

He expressed dissatisfaction over implementation of recommendations on initiating action against officials who failed to use Kannada in the administration. The authority had instructed all deputy commissioners and chief executive officers of the zilla panchayats to review the progress of the implementation of Kannada in the administration in review meetings of the Karnataka Development Programmes.

Dr. Siddalingaiah said he would hold a comprehensive review of the implementation of Kannada in administration in all government departments after holding the review of the State Secretariat.

He said the authority had held discussions with the Kannada University at Hampi for introducing a long distance education programme in using Kannada in administration for the officials of the government departments. The university, which was likely to introduce the course shortly, was working out syllabus, he added.
