Malayalam portal on jobs and education launched

Staff Reporter

Envisaged as a repository of digital information

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Malayalam portal on jobs and education - www.padavukal.org - of the Kerala State IT Mission was launched here on Friday by Minister for Education M.A. Baby.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Baby said the Government had launched a drive to reach IT-enabled education to students belonging to the underprivileged sections of society. "A major weakness in this sector is the inability of teachers to fully utilise the potential of IT tools in educating the children.

The children for their part are using IT tools to learn. More training needs to be provided to the teachers to overcome this shortcoming," Mr. Baby said.

`Padavukal', according to IT Mission director K.R. Jyotilal, has been envisaged as a repository of digital information about 11 aspects of education and employment.

The portal contains information on education, educational institutions, education in foreign countries, distance education, entrance and competitive examinations, aptitude tests, employment opportunities, successful job-seeking, self-employment, recruitment agencies and scholarships and loans. The portal contains information on about 700 topics spread across these 11 areas.

The section on employment opportunities, for instance, lists careers that can be had in defence, media, engineering, medicine, cinema, agriculture and tourism, among others.

In the section on `how to be successful in getting employed' there are articles on various aspects of job hunting. The role played by various recruitment agencies, including the UPSC and the SSBs, in providing jobs has been laid out in the section on `recruitment agencies.'

Numerous loan schemes offered to students by nationalised banks across the country have been listed in the section on `loans and scholarships'. However, the portal has omitted to list the contact numbers of the loan sections of these banks or web sites where further details can be accessed. Those who wish to go overseas for higher education can find details on education in various countries including the U.S. and the U.K.

In his inaugural address Mr. Baby in fact suggested that this section should feature a scroll that warned the students about fly-by-night operators who cheated students after promising them bright educational opportunities in various countries.

"Recently the Education Department had to handle a situation where students were offered the chance to study in Cyprus but were subsequently cheated," he pointed out.

The updated version of `Padavukal' in the CD format was also released by Mr. Baby.
