Karunanidhi administers pledge

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday administered national integration pledge to his cabinet colleagues, officers and Secretariat staff on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He paid floral tributes to a portrait of Indira Gandhi. The venue of the event was to the tenth floor auditorium because of showers just ahead of the scheduled programme. — Special Correspondent

8-year RI for 3 in bomb blast case

KANCHEEPURAM: `Avadi' Thiyagarajamurthy, Judge of the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases, Poonamallee, on Friday slapped 8 years rigorous imprisonment on three persons, arrested in connection with a bomb blast incident that took place in 1996 at a hotel in Chennai.

A total of 17 persons were injured in the blast that took place on September 27, 1996. The accused were reported to be members of the "Islamiya Padukappu Padai." — Staff Reporter

Train halt at Melmaruvathur

CHENNAI: Due to persistent demands from rail users, passenger associations and elected representatives, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has ordered stoppage of Train Nos.6115/6116 Chennai Egmore-Pondicherry Express at Melmaruvathur and Madurantakam from November 24, according to a railway press release. — Special Correspondent

India's decision welcomed

CHENNAI: Pazha Nedumaran, president of the Tamil Desiya Iyakkam, welcomed India's decision to supply relief materials to Tamils in Sri Lanka, but expressed doubts whether the same would reach the "suffering Tamils."

In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Nedumaran said if the materials were to reach the Tamils, India should demand that the Sri Lankan Government open the A-9 highway.

Southern Railway to run winter specials

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run following special trains to clear the extra rush of passengers during the winter months of November, December 2006 and January 2007.

Chennai Central-Ajmer (weekly) special (0639) will leave Central at 3.30 p.m. on all Thursdays from November 23 to January 18 and reach Ajmer at noon on Saturdays. In the return direction, train no. 0640 will leave Ajmer at 9 p.m. on all Saturdays from November 25 to January 20 and arrive Central at 5.15 p.m. on Mondays.

Chennai Central-Jodhpur (weekly) specials (0653) will leave Central at 3.30 p.m. on all Mondays from November 20 to January 15 and reach Jodhpur at 11.55 a.m. on Wednesdays.

In the opposite direction train no. 0654 will leave Jodhpur at 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from November 22 to January 17 and arrive Central at 5.15 p.m. on Fridays, according to a Southern Railway press release. — Special Correspondent
