THIRUVALLA: Payyannur College defeated College of Physical Education (Kozhikode) 3-2, via the tie-breaker, to win the 44th Mar Thoma Trophy all-Kerala inter-collegiate football tournament at the Mar Thoma College Ground here on Friday. The teams were goal-less at the end of the regulation period and extra time. Kurikesh Mathew, former football international, gave away the prizes.
Special prizes: Jerome Sebastian (CPE, Koz, best player). Rasheed (CPE, best defender), Dhanesh (Christ, best midfielder). Illyas Mohammed (Payyannur, best goalkeeper), K.Asif (Payyannur, most promising player), Christ College (Fairplay Trophy).
Assumption triumphs
Assumption College, Changanassery, with an all-win record in the four-team league, won the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate women's volleyball title for the seventh consecutive year at the St Xavier's College courts, Aluva, on Friday. Assumption defeated Alphonsa (Pala) 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 and SNM (Maliankara) 25-10, 25-6, 25-9 in the league. Alphonsa finished runner-up while host St Xavier's was third.
Easy for Packers CC
Packers Cricket Club scored an easy 66-run win over Kesavashire Cricket Club in the Canara Bank- TDCA `C' division league at the Vellayani Agriculture College ground, Thrivananthapuram, on Friday.
The scores: Packers CC 159 in 34.5 overs (Ravi Kumar six for 61, Anil Kumar four for 41) bt Kesavashire CC 93 in 18.3 overs (Sreekumar five for 20, Aadarsh four for 5).
RNM, BVG in final
RNM HS (Badagara) and BVG HS (Narayambalam) will clash in the final of the Mother Pauline memorial all-Kerala inter-school girls volleyball tournament at Varapuzha, Kochi, on Saturday. The results (semifinals): RNM HS, Badagara bt EDHS, Karimpanam 25-13, 25-9, 25-8; BVG HS, Nayarambalam bt PCGHS, Vellikulangara 25-8, 25-10, 25-10.
Sreekumar Nair remains skipper
D. Sreekumar Nair has been retained skipper of the Kerala Ranji Team for the coming season. The decision to retain the former India under-19 player as the captain of the side was made by the KCA senior selection committee in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. The committee also picked up 14 other players to represent the State in the Plate match against Vidharbha to be played in Palakkad from November 23 to 26. It will decide on the composition of the team for the remaining matches after the first encounter.
