Function put off due to inconvenience of Chief Minister

MALAPPURAM: Twelve freedom fighters from Malappuram district above 80 years of age will be honoured as part of the golden jubilee of the State. Although they were to be honoured on Saturday afternoon at a function to be held at Puzhakkattiri, the event was put off owing to the inconvenience of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. The new date will be announced later, said district administration officials here on Friday.

Memorials will be built for 10 freedom fighters, including Ali Musliar and Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdoom, from the district. They will be constructed jointly by the three-tier panchayats and municipalities.

The Chief Minister was to lay the foundation stone for the memorials of Kattilassery Mohammed Musliar and M.P. Narayana Menon at Saturday's function. This will take place later, said officials.

The other freedom fighters for whom memorials will be built are Veliyamkode Umer Kazi (Ponnani), Mamburam Syed Fazal Thangal (A.R. Nagar panchayat), Panakkad Syed Hasainar and Varian Kunnath Kunhahamed Haji (Malappuram), K. Damodaran (Tirur) and K. Madhavan Nair (Manjeri). The 12 freedom fighters to be honoured are Malavattathu Mohammed Haji, K.M. Baputty Master (Pulamanthol), P. Rajendran Master (Arimra), P. Gopalan Nair (Irumbiliyam), Kavungal Narayanan (Manjeri), P. Sankunni Nair (Puthur Pallikkal), Poolathodiyil Appanu (Malappuram), P. Narayanan Nair (Melmuri), Mohammed Mankarathodi (Kodur), Ali Molla (Koottilangadi), P.K. Warrier (Kottakkal) and Asanar Kutty (Tanur).
