INSPECTION: Minister for Horticulture Shashikanth Naik checking the size of onions being procured at the procurement centre in Hubli on Friday.
HUBLI: Minister for Horticulture Shashikanth Naik paid a surprise visit to the onion procurement centre set up at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard at Amargol here on Friday to inspect the grading procedure. He also interacted with farmers who had come with their produce and heard their grievances. The Minister inspected the grading procedure of onions and expressed satisfaction over the manner in which it was being done. Since the grading of onions was being done manually, there was a delay in the process. He promised to take steps under the National Horticulture Mission to provide grading equipment. APMC secretary K.K.S.V. Prasad gave details on the stock of onion at the procurement centre and the sales executed. APMC president Shankrappa Bijawada explained to the Minister the proposal on starting a new market place in the market yard for sale of flowers and fruits. He said since the new market was being set up in the place adjoining the railway track it would be helpful for the import and export business. Mr Bijawad sought aid under the Horticulture Mission for adequate infrastructure related to the rail transport.
