DHARWAD: Hundreds of folk artistes from different parts of the district and neighbouring districts stole the show at the "Samskruti Dhara" procession, organised to mark the beginning of the Dharwad Utsav here on Friday. While the utsav began on a grand note with hundreds of artistes, writers, folk artistes, school and college students and members of several organisations taking part in the procession, it was the folk artistes who mesmerised others with their performance. Playing several traditional musical instruments, they captivated the thousands of people who had gathered to witness the procession. The utsav showcased Jaggalige Mela, Somana Kunita, Patta Kunita, Tatva Pada, Nandi Dhwaja Kunita, Karadi Majalu, Lambani Nrutya, Hejje Mela, Puja Kunita, Kamsaley, Kinari Jogi Pada, Radha Nata, Veeragasey, Gorappa and Yakshagana. Revenue and district in-charge Minister Jagadish Shettar flagged off the procession by offering puja to the statue of the goddess Bhuavaneshwari, along with veteran poet Channaveer Kanavi. Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar, Superintendent of Police B. Shrikantappa, Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani, several senior officials, writers and artistes participated in the procession that had on display the rich cultural heritage of the district, the State and the nation in the form of around 30 tableaux. Girls sported traditional attire of north Karnataka and students dressed up as eminent people of Dharwad. Apart from the tableaux presenting a glimpse of culture, there were tableaux presenting developmental projects of the State and new initiatives. Students of schools and colleges dressed in their uniforms and other outfits added colour to the procession. Teachers also participated in the procession.
Procession route
The 2-km procession began from R.N. Shetty Stadium, passed through Subhas Road, KCC Bank Circle, Gandhi Chowk, Hosayallapur and reached Karnatak College grounds where the inaugural function was held. It took more than three hours for the procession to reach the grounds.
