Sharmila eyes third title

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Fifteen-year-old Sharmila Nicollet will be looking for her third title of the season when the 39th Northern India ladies golf championship tees off at the Delhi Golf Club here on November 21.

Sharmila, with a handicap of -1, had claimed the Southern India and the Punjab Open crowns earlier this season. She is also part of the three-member Indian team for the Asian Games in Doha.

Vaishavi Sinha, a -2 handicapper and winner of the Madras Open, and Meghna Bal, a -3 handicapper, are the other two members of the team. Shruti Khanna is the reserve player.

Laverry, who became the third winner of this season by topping the field in the Noida Open recently, is among the leading contenders along with former champion Shruti, Lalitha Balasubramanium and Vandana Aggarwal.

The notable absentees in the main field of 23 include defending champion Irina Brar, Bhavna Shetty, Shradhanjali Singh and Kanika Minocha.

The annual Mawana Ladies Golf Week will witness several handicap events. In three categories, 54-hole handicap events will be held. The categories are: Gold (handicap of -12 and below), Silver (-13 to -24) and Bronze (-25 to -36). The Siel junior girls Trophy will be awarded to the best performer below the age of 18 years.

The inter-club competition will be held among the clubs from Delhi, Noida, National Capital Region, Chandigarh and Kolkata on the first three days. The championship is the fifth leg of the women's tour this season. The caravan will travel to the Eastern India Open, Western India Open and the West Bengal Open before returning to the Capital for the National championship between February 7 and 10, 2007.
