DAVANGERE: Managing director of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation A.C. Joshi said the corporation would purchase 1,538 buses to enhance its services and added that KSRTC was committed to providing transport facility in every corner of the State. Speaking at a function to celebrate the silver jubilee of the Davangere depot here on Thursday, Mr. Joshi said the KSRTC was set to earn a net profit of over Rs. 60 crore this year. Mr. Joshi claimed that the accident rate of the KSRTC buses had come down considerably during the last two years and the accident rate of KSRTC buses stood at 0.16 for every one lakh km. Mr. Joshi noted that KSRTC buses cover 20 lakh km a day serving over 22 lakh commuters each day. He maintained that the Volvo bus services was fast catching up and there was a good response to it particularly from those who travel long distances. The KSRTC was planning to introduce more Volvo buses to the existing fleet of 150. A clinic had been set up exclusively for KSRTC staff to provide medical services. A scheme had been introduced for alcoholics and they would be given 40 days leave to undergo the de-addiction camp. Siddeshwar, MP of Davangere, distributing the awards to drivers for accident-free driving in the past five years, called upon the KSRTC to improve its services in rural parts. He told the drivers people travel in buses with faith in the drivers and they (the drivers) should refrain from rash and negligent driving that could result in accidents. He gave away silver medals to three drivers Mohandas, Syed Saifulla and Yogendra for accident-free driving in the past five years. H.S. Shivashankar, MLC, and Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district M.B. Dyaberi spoke. Divisional Commissioner of the KSRTC Premdas welcomed the gathering.
