Land lease triggers protests

It is restricted to permanent J&K residents: Government

  • Bid to dilute State's unique character: parties
  • Militant outfits also oppose decision

Jammu: Leasing of land in the hill resort of Gulmarg has snowballed into a controversy with many parties, including the National Conference, opposing the move as an attempt to dilute Jammu and Kashmir's unique character, enshrined in Article 370 of the Constitution.

Under Article 370, only permanent residents can buy land in the State.

The Cabinet sanctioned the auction of approximately 550 kanals of land for construction of hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related facilities in the virgin valley of Dhobighat. The Government said the tourist centre could be developed only with private investment. The decision triggered protests, even by militant outfits, in various parts.
