Chennai: Teleserials adapted from short stories written by distinguished Tamil writers will be broadcast on Podhigai channel during the next few weeks. Doordarshan will screen these short films as part of its `Indian Classics' series. The serials were commissioned by DD to showcase literature and art from various parts of the country. Actor-producer Revathi has brought out a serialised version of `Verukku Neer', a short story by Rajam Krishnan. It will be telecast from November 27 to November 30 (at 10.10 p.m.) and on December 2 at 8.30 p.m. Producer Janaki Viswanathan (of national award-winning `Kutty' fame) has adapted `Chandrikaiyin Kadhai' by Bharathiar. Viewers can watch the show at 10.10 p.m. on November 21, 22 and 23. A five-part short film based on `Akal Vilakku' by Mu. Varadarasan will appear in the same slot for five days beginning December 4. The serials have a variety of themes.N.G. Srinivasa, Doordarshan's Deputy Director-General, South Zone, said the serials were "value-based." "The budget for the Indian classics series for the year 2006-2007 is Rs. 30 crore. The work of eminent writers in 15 languages will be featured," Mr. Srinivasa told mediapersons here on Tuesday. Top producers including Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Girish Karnad had brought out the serials.
