Speaker yet to decide on oral complaint

Special Correspondent

Preferred by Peter Alphonse against Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: Speaker R. Avudaiappan said here on Friday that he was yet to decide on the oral complaint preferred by Congress whip in the Assembly, Peter Alphonse, against All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa.

Mr. Alphonse had apprised the Speaker of a statement issued by Ms. Jayalalithaa, accusing a member of coming to the House after consuming alcohol.

Mr. Avudaiappan told reporters that he had not received the statement issued by Ms. Jayalalithaa. "I cannot ask for the statement as that will render me prejudiced." In any case, Speakers do not take action on oral complaints.

Asked if he would look into the issue if DMDK leader and MLA Vijayakant preferred a complaint, Mr. Avudaiappan said he would certainly look into any complaint preferred to him. He expected the Opposition to contribute to the discussions in the House. "We do not want them to be conservative," he remarked, when asked if he would appeal to the Opposition to cooperate during the forthcoming winter session.

Asked if he had given any thought to meeting the Opposition leaders over a meal as is done by Speakers of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Avudaiappan said there was no precedence for such a get together here.

On the question of change of seat for AIADMK MLA S.V. Shanmugham, who had differences with his party leader, the Speaker said that he was yet to receive a request from the member.

The House meets for a brief session beginning December 4. The Business Advisory Committee of the House would meet later the same day to decide the duration of the session and the business it would transact.
