WATER MANAGEMENT: The road being dug up at Puliyakulam in the city on Thursday to lay pipes for diverting excess water from the Valankulam Tank. - Photo: K. Ananthan
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation has laid a pipe from Puliyakulam to Sanganur Canal beyond Sowripalayam to divert surplus water from Valankulam Tank. The work was done on Thursday night to allow water overflowing from the tank to reach the canal and thereby reduce threat to the dwellings along Valankulam. According to sources in the Corporation, the new canal was dug following a demand to protect the encroachers from flooding.
Water release
Official sources, however, said that the new canal was dug as residential colonies such as Sivaram Nagar that were located east of the Sungam Bypass Road faced the threat of flooding if water was released through sluices on that side. Earlier, the Corporation could release surplus water from the tank to Ammankulam through a canal across the Sungam Junction to reach Puliyakulam. With only houses and no water at Ammankulam that was once a water body, the Corporation was forced to lay the new pipe. It was said that political leaders had appealed for protection to the encroachers from floods for the time being. They were said to have assured organisations working for water resources revival that the tank could have water to its capacity once the encroachers were relocated in multi-storeyed tenements the Corporation planned to construct.
