A.L. Lakshmanan passes away

A.L. Lakshmanan

CHENNAI: A.L. Lakshmanan, former president of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and grandson of Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday. He was 82.

Mr. Lakshmanan was a former trustee of the Madras Port Trust. His interest in history in the making made him an avid autograph collector. His collection over the decades is believed to be one of the rarest in India. It includes the autographs of several luminaries of India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

He was instrumental in instituting the All-India Murugappa Gold Cup for hockey. Deeply religious, he contributed quietly to several spiritual causes.

Mr. Lakshmanan is survived by his wife and two sons.
