Trade unions to observe token strike

LPF is non-committal

NEYVELI: As many as 13 trade unions of Neyveli Lignite Corporation have decided to observe a token strike from 10 p.m. on November 23 to 10 p.m. on November 24, in support of the contract labourers' demands for minimum bonus and equal pay for equal work.

The contract labourers have been on indefinite strike from November 14. However, the Labour Progressive Front (LPF), sole recognised union of the NLC, has not committed itself to the strike.

G. Dhandapani, president of the LPF, told The Hindu that the union would exert pressure on the management to concede the demand of the contract labourers.

As for the token strike, the LPF had stated that the labourers had gone ahead with their agitation programme without any prior consultation. Therefore, it could not make any announcement in an off-handed manner on it participation in the proposed one-day strike without consulting its executive committee. V. Muthuvel, CITU president, is hopeful that the LPF too will join the strike.
