ALAPPUZHA: The department of general surgery, TD Medical College, Alappuzha, will organise a one-day seminar on breast carcinoma and training for surgeons at the Lake Palace resort, Alappuzha, on Sunday as part of its continuous education programme. MP K.S. Manoj will inaugurate the programme. Sreedevi, Head, Department of breast carcinoma, Adayar Cancer Institute, B.K. Madhumohan, Head of surgery, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, and experts from the Regional Cancer Centre, will present papers. Breast cancer if detected early could be treated and cured completely. Women could identify growth in breasts by self-examination and a doctor should be contacted if any hardening of breast was noticed, said organising committee chairman E. Abdul Salim. Though breast cancer was found among women of 50 years and above earlier, it was now common among women above 30 years. Those with a high fat content in body were more prone to breast cancer, he said. The changed food habits of people were one of the reasons for the high incidence of breast cancer. Modern developments in medicine had made it possible to remove only the cancerous part of the breast and protect the breast, Mr. Abdul Salim said.
