`CPI(M), Congress sabotaged probe'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.K. Krishnadas on Saturday alleged that the Congress had joined hands with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to sabotage the demand for a CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation] probe into the SNC Lavalin case.

At a press conference here, he said the CPI(M), which was propping up the Congress-led Government at the Centre, had apparently exerted pressure on the Congress party to persuade the CBI against taking up the SNC Lavalin case.

This case, involving corruption to the tune of Rs.375 crore, was the biggest scam Kerala had seen in its history. he said

And the case had thrown shadows of doubt over CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who had occupied the position of Electricity Minister in the State when SNC Lavalin and the Kerala State Electricity Board signed the deal for the renovation and modernisation of three hydel projects in the State.

He said the CBI's deposition in the court explaining the reason for not taking up this case was "unusual and surprising." The CBI had said that this case was being investigated by the State Vigilance.

This is untrue, since Vigilance had stopped probing the case nine months ago.

Mr. Krishnadas asked how the State Vigilance could be expected to bring out the truth about the case when the Government in power was controlled by the very same person believed to be the prime suspect for involvement in the case.
