Bhargava Rayudu hits century

Principal Correspondent

Cal Public School records a big win over St. Peter's HS

HYDERABAD: A century by Bhargava Rayudu (118 not out, 150b, 11 x 4) was the highlight of Cal Public School's 163-run win over St. Peter's HS in the pre-quarterfinals of the inter-school (under-13) cricket tournament for the Bro. John of God Trophy here on Saturday.

Electing to bat, Cal PS batsmen looked least concerned about the reputation of the rival outfit (St. Peter's had sent a world record in this tournament recently). Bhargava Rayudu, cousin of Ambati Tirupati Rayudu, was in good nick and in the company of Yatin Reddy (87, 13 x 4) treated the bowling with disdain.

When St. Peter's batted, the focus was on the two world-record holders — openers B. Manoj Kumar (68) and Mohammed Shaibaaz Tumbi (5). Shaibaaz was out to a smart Rohit Reddy at mid-wicket off Yatin Reddy, disappointing the few spectators who turned up.

But, Manoj showed his ability to play fluent strokes, particularly the pull and square drives off the backfoot. With wickets falling at regular intervals, he too succumbed holing out to leg-spinner Rayudu at deep mid-off. St. Peter's was finally skittled out for 149.

In the first semifinal, K. Akshat Kumar (101 not out, 22 x 4) helped St. Andrew's HS `A' score a 10-wicket win against Gowtham Model School.

The scores:

Inter-schools semifinals (under-13): Gowtham Model School 194 for nine (Nandu 59, Nikhil four for 30) lost to St. Andrew's HS `A' 198 for no loss (K. Akshat Kumar 101 n.o., B. Anirudh 67 n.o.).

Pre-quarterfinals: Cal PS 312 for two in 50 overs (Bhargava Rayudu 118 n.o., Chaitanya Reddy 47, Yatin Reddy 87, Rahul Singh 31 n.o.) bt St. Peter's HS 149 in 46.4 overs (Manoj Kumar 68).

A-division league: IICT 93 (S.A. Yaser five for 37) lost to FCI 94 for three (Naveed 51 n.o.).

Midhani 181 for four (Ajay 60, Venugopal 61 n.o.) bt NFC 145 (A. Sudhakar Rao 48).
