Pradip Kumar Das

Cuttack: Chief Justice of India Justice Y K Sabharwal has said the Indian judiciary has played a very crucial role in development of the country in general and in ensuring good governance in particular.

"Indian judiciary has been very pro-active and has scrupulously and overzealously guarded the rights fundamental for human existence. I believe that judiciary has played its role well," the CJI said while delivering the Barrister B M Patnaik memorial lecture on Saturday. He was speaking on `Role of Judiciary in Good Governance'.

The CJI was delivering the sixth law-lecture in memory of Barrister Patnaik who was a constitutional expert.

He said though there was no law in the country overs gender inequality, the Supreme Court had laid down guidelines against sexual harassment and abuse.
