`Proposal for emergency services team in police stations will be considered'

Bangalore: It was a show of promptness and valour that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The demonstration by the Home Guards, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services personnel on how rescue efforts are carried out during natural and man-made disasters, on the occasion of National Disaster Reduction Day, which was observed by the Directorate of Home Guards, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services at the Sullivan Police Hockey Stadium here on Saturday, was a delight for the spectators.

They demonstrated rescue operations during earthquakes, floods, explosions, terrorist attacks and epidemics. The fire fighting force showed how people trapped in high-rise buildings are rescued with the help of fire-fighting equipment such as "Snorkel unit" which has a 105-feet high ladder. There are three such "Snorkel units" in the State, officials of the directorate said. Minister for Home M.P. Prakash said the Government would consider a proposal from the Directorate of Home Guards, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services to have a team from the directorate in key police stations in the city. "We have received a proposal from Ajai Kumar Singh, Director General of Police and Commandant General, Home Guards and Director, Civil Defence, to deploy a fire and emergency services team at police stations in the city so that they could reach the affected spot faster. The Government will look into the proposal. We may make an allocation in the budget for the purpose next year," he said.
