dated November 20, 1956: BBC feature on Gandhiji

A tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by the South African statesman, General Jan Smuts during the Indian leader's visit to Britain in 1931 for the Second Round Table Conference on India was recalled on November 18 in a BBC broadcast portraying Mahatma Gandhi. General Smuts, who had come in contact with the Mahatma when he led the passive resistance movement in South Africa, was present in London during the Indian leader's visit. And he said of Gandhiji: "These people (the British Government leaders) do not know I have fought this man for 20 years. I know what is what. Ultimately, they have got to settle with him. He is the only man who can deliver the goods." The Mahatma's Secretary, Mr. Pyarelal, who had accompanied him to the Round Table Conference, narrated this tribute of General Smuts.
