State disputes A.P. claim on storing water

Nagesh Prabhu

BANGALORE: The State Government has not agreed to a proposal by the Andhra Pradesh Government to impound water in the Jurala Dam built across the Krishna for the next kharif season as claimed by the latter.

Officials of the Irrigation and Revenue departments of the State have refuted the claim of the Andhra Pradesh Government that the State has agreed to its proposal to impound of 12 tmcft of water in the dam. Even a section of the press in Andhra Pradesh recently reported that Karnataka had given the green signal to impound water. The Andhra Pradesh Government wants to store 12 tmcft of water for the next kharif season as against eight tmcft.

The officials told The Hindu that the Government was firm on its stand that no full storage would be allowed till the completion of resettlement and rehabilitation of 2,000 families in five villages of Raichur district.

A team of ministers from Andhra Pradesh visited the State in September and urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to expedite the resettlement and rehabilitation process. The Andhra Pradesh Government had agreed to bear the cost of rehabilitation and resettlement amounting to Rs. 90 crore. The process also included construction of two bridges and retaining walls to protect Chenna Basaveshwara and Dattatreya temples in Raichur district, they said.

Nascent stage

Even as the process of rehabilitation and resettlement initiated by the State Government was at a nascent stage, Andhra Pradesh appeared to be in a hurry, the officials said.

The officials, however, pointed out that the rehabilitation and resettlement work would take at least two years for completion.

Meanwhile, Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa said that the State Government did not hold discussions with Andhra Pradesh on impounding water. The team, which visited the State in September, gave a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
