NEW DELHI: World champion Olesya Gladkova of Russia made an early exit losing to Ri Jong Hyang of North Korea on the second day, which saw Indians win two of the four bouts in the fourth World women's boxing championship at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Sunday. Ri Jong has had success earlier against the Russian when she beat her to win her first World championship gold in Antalya, Turkey, in 2002. However, three years later in Podolsk, Russia, Olesya had her revenge when she won by a comfortable 25-15 margin. On Sunday though, they met very early in the draw, and Hyang pounced on the champion from the start in the 48kg class. After a slender 3-2 lead in the first round, Hyang improved it to 10-7 landing straight punches against a defensive Russian. Stung by the deficit, Olesya hit her opponent behind the ears earning negative points before losing out the second round bout, 16-10. India had a fruitful day with debutant N. Usha powering past the World bronze medallist, Sandra Bizier of Canada in the 57kg category. Usha kept her chin up despite losing some early points as the Pan-American champion Sandra opened up 4-1 lead. Usha rallied brilliantly in the first round itself to close it at 5-5. Though Sandra was one up again in the second, Usha produced some quick punches to go up 12-8. With the crowd cheering for the home boxer, Usha stayed put and won the bout 20-14. Kalpana Chaudhary was the other Indian to win. Up against Nadia Shehata of Egypt, Kalpana won her bout 24-7 after having been stretched in the first round. S. Ibomcha Devi (60kg) lost to EU bronze medallist Lucie Bertaud of France 13-23, while in the 86kg category, Jyotsna's loss in the early round was a major setback for the hosts.
