NEW DELHI: Criticising the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government for failing to address the "real issues," Communist Party of India leader and All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta said workers and farm labourers would begin a "new phase of resistance" next week against the Government's policies. "We are intensifying the battle" to make policies more sensitive to the needs of the people, he said and maintained that the discussions in Parliament to fine-tune social welfare schemes had been "fruitless." The mandate of the UPA Government was not restricted to keeping communalism in check, and included poverty alleviation and providing employment. However, the Government had failed to make an impression on both counts. The November 23 rally would be followed by a countrywide general strike on December 14. This will be followed by local action, especially in Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bihar and Haryana, which have borne the brunt of police atrocities, price rise and rural distress. The rally would be organised by the AITUC and the All-India Agricultural Workers' Union. .
