ACUK celebrates `Umpires' Day'

Bangalore: The Association of Cricket Umpires' Karnataka (ACUK) celebrated `Umpires' Day' with fanfare and a touch of introspection at the Chinnaswamy Stadium premises here on Sunday morning.

Former India fast bowler and current Karnataka coach Venkatesh Prasad, who was the chief guest for the morning session, spoke about the need to implement the ICC code of conduct.

"The laws should be strictly implemented," Prasad said and with disarming candour he added that there have been times in his career when he might have been rude to some umpires in the heat of the moment. "I apologise for that," Prasad said besides praising the key role played by umpires in controlling the game of cricket.

Rich tradition

KSCA secretary Brijesh Patel spoke about the quality umpires who have emerged from Karnataka over the years. "Even now in the umpires exam, Karnataka has the maximum candidates who have cleared the papers," Patel said.

The ACUK president Shahvir Tarapore requested corporates and multi-national companies to do their bit to help the umpiring fraternity. — Principal Correspondent
