Bypoll: CPI to support Congress

Special Correspondent

But will campaign separately

  • Party has not yet "come to terms with Congress leaders' statements"
  • YSR's promise of package to Telangana was a major factor

HYDERABAD: Communist Party of India State council has decided to support the Congress in the forthcoming elections to Karimnagar and Bobbili Lok Sabha seats.

Following a representation made by the State CPI unit, the party's central leadership took a decision to this effect. "We have decided against extending our support to the TDP and the question of supporting the BJP and TRS does not arise. The party has, therefore, decided to support the Congress," CPI State secretary K. Narayana said.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Dr. Narayana said the party would, however, not share a common platform with the Congress during the election campaign, as "it has not come to terms with the different statements being made by the Congress leaders." Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's assurance on announcing special package for Telangana region was one of the major factors that contributed to the decision, he added.

    CPI(M) meet today

Meanwhile, the CPI (M) central leadership asked the party's State committee, which is scheduled to meet on Monday, to decide on the stand to be adopted in the byelections.

"I cannot imagine what they would deliberate," CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said.

Asked whether the party would continue its alliance with the TDP, he said, "We cannot extrapolate local bodies with the party's stand at national and State levels. The party has kept its options open and its stand will be made public soon."
