Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary

KOCHI: The former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi played a significant role in protecting the secular nature of Indian polity, said the Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran here on Sunday. She took strong decisions to ensure the security of the nation, he said, while inaugurating a function to observe her 89th birth anniversary, organised by the District Congress Committee (DCC).

DCC president K.P. Dhanapalan presided over the function. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretaries Benny Behnan and Ajay Tharayil; K. Babu, MLA; and other leaders, including Henry Austin, Dominic Presentation, M.A. Kuttappan and Simi Rosebelle John spoke. — Staff Reporter

Medha to write to Chief Minister

KOCHI: Medha Patkar, activist, will write to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan about the problems faced by residents of Vaduthala through which a railway line to Vallarpadam is planned. At a meeting organised by the Janakeeya Samithi, which is leading an agitation against the line, she said development should take place in public interest and not to further private interest. Activists of the samithi had opposed the survey for the proposed alignment a few days ago. P.R. Neelakandan, C.K. Janu and Geethanandan, social activists, and fishermen's union leader Majeendran spoke.
