NEW DELHI: Aruna Mishra pounded her way past Turkey's Yeliz Yesil to seal at least a bronze medal for India on the third day when the Russian World champion, Yulia Nemtsova, survived an early scare in the fourth World women's boxing championship at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

Aruna fought like a possessed warrior, pounding punches on her Turkish opponent in the 66kg quarterfinal.

    Going for the kill

Playing in her second World championship, Aruna decided to go for the kill from the start as she opened up a 9-4 lead after having been held 3-3 midway through the first round.

The Indian, who had lost to the eventual World champion and best boxer of the last championship in Podolsk, Russia, Mary Spencer of Canada, allowed just one point to Yeliz in the low-scoring second round.

Starting the final round at 12-5, Aruna connected a few quick straight punches to win her bout 17-7. She now meets France's Aya Cissoko in the semifinals.

Yulia, the 63kg World champion and China's untested Xueting Niu fought defensively through the three rounds to end at 10-10, forcing the technical bench to refer to the individual judges' scoring.

After unusually long time, the bench declared Yulia the winner at 24-22, saving Russia the blushes after having lost one World champion in Oleysa Gladkova on Sunday.

    Fruitful day

The host had a fruitful day with three of the four pugilists making through.

    C. Aswathy Mol, who won the bronze medal in the last Worlds, lost 21-4 in the 70kg quarterfinal.

Pitted against the Pan-American champion Ariane Fortin, Aswathy could not handle the fierce punches of her Canadian rival.

Aswathy was down 0-7 after the first round and then won just three points in the second when Ariane opened up a 15-3 lead, before winning 21-4.

Chhotu Loura (50kg) and L. Sarita Devi (52kg) were the other Indians who made it to the quarterfinals in their respective weight categories. Chhotu takes on Eun A. Jang of Korea and Sarita meets Maarit Teuronen of Finland on Tuesday for a place in the semifinals.
