KOTTAYAM: Panic prevailed for over five hours at Puthupariyaram, near Thodupuzha, in Idukki district when an elephant brought to lug timber ran amok on Monday. The elephant, Mohanan, had killed a woman two years ago. The pachyderm overturned an autorickshaw and a motorbike even as two mahouts tried to divert its attention, according to reports reaching here. The authorities deployed the police in full force and brought in veterinary surgeon Abraham Tharakan from Alappuzha. He brought the elephant under control with a shot of tranquillizer around 3.30 p.m.
