Two bus passengers robbed

CUDDALORE: Unidentified robbers snatched Rs. 2 lakh at knifepoint from two bus passengers early on Monday.

Sarfuddin and Nainar Kaja, traders in handicraft items, were travelling in a State Transport Corporation bus from Chennai to Velankanni. As the bus neared Velakudi in Chidambaram block, some co-passengers pulled out a knife and forced the driver to stop the bus.

They then forced the traders to get down and relieved them of the cash before escaping.

The driver informed police at Vallampadugai check-post who in turn alerted the Chidambaram police. — Special Correspondent

12 qualify for colour TV price bid

CHENNAI: Twelve of the 13 bidders, who had offered to supply colour televisions to the State Government, have qualified for the next round of the tender process, the price bid.

Global tenders were floated for procurement of 25 lakh televisions and 120 companies from 16 countries had bought applications to participate in the tender.

Of this, 13 had finally submitted their bids along with model television sets. The model sets were brought to the Secretariat on Monday and the tenders were opened in front of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and the committee constituted for procuring the sets.

The price bids will be opened on November 22, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Flood relief for 59 families

CHENNAI: The State Government has so far disbursed relief to 59 families who lost their kin and owners of 2252 houses that were damaged during the recent floods.

An official release here said on Sunday the Chief Minister had asked the Revenue Department to collect details regarding extent of damage caused by the floods and undertake immediate relief measures.

The Chief Minister had also asked them to provide relief to the next of kin of persons who lost their lives and for those whose houses were damaged, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Solatium for family of girl found dead

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday sanctioned Rs.50,000 to the parents of the girl student who found dead in a well in a private school in Omalur. He conveyed his condolences to the parents, said a release.

The Chief Minister also announced Rs.50,000 each to the next of kin of five persons who were washed away in flash floods in Panchalinga rivulet near Udumalaipettai.

The five--Ezhumalai, his son Nandagopal, Chandrasekharan, Mahendran and Manikandan--were part of a group of devotees who were coming back from Sabarimala. — Special Correspondent

SHG women members to be trained

CHENNAI: Twenty-three thousand women in Self Help Groups will be provided training in various trades at a cost of Rs.3.5 crore, a government release here said. — Special Correspondent

Stolen motorcycles recovered; 2 held

Nagercoil : The police here arrested two persons, on Sunday, on charges of selling stolen motorbikes from various parts of the district through an agency in Vadaserry near Nagercoil.

According to the police, Manikandan (25) of Krishnankovil and Anthony (32) of Vellamadam were arrested and 24 motorcycles recovered.

One Chennai based Austin sent the motorbikes stolen from various places in Chennai to the duo.

Court boycott

Nagercoil : Lawyers from various courts in Kanyakumari district boycotted the court proceedings after their colleague Siva Kumar was allegedly attacked by the police recently.

More than 900 lawyers attached to Nagercoil, Eraniel, Padmanabhapuram and Kuzuthurai courts took part in the agitation.

Rain continues

Nagercoil : Various parts of Kanyakumari district experienced heavy rain for the third day on Monday.

However, the sky remained overcast throughout the day.

Fishermen in Chinnamuttom did not venture into the sea following the rain.

The maximum rainfall of 8.2 mm was recorded at Myladi followed by 7.5 mm in Surulode, 7.1 in Pechipparai, 4.6 in Pechipparai, 4.2 in Chittar II and 1.2 in Perunchani.

The water level in Pechipparai stood at 46.01 feet against the total capacity of 48 feet, 73.10 feet in Perunchani (77 feet), 16.79 feet in Chittar I (18 feet) and 16.79 feet in Chittar II (18 feet).

Kerosene seized

Nagercoil : Revenue officials seized 120 litres of kerosene from few persons here on Monday.

According to sources, the officials rushed to the fair-price shop at Kurusadi church near Nagercoil and seized 120 liters of kerosene, when some unidentified persons indulged in purchasing kerosene from the cardholders. On seeing the officials, they escaped.

Spirit confiscated

TIRUNELVELI : The Thisayanvilai police on Monday seized 1,260 litres of rectified spirit, worth Rs.12 lakh, in 36 plastic cans, from an abandoned mini-lorry.

The police said a patrol team tried to stop the mini lorry during their routine vehicle check in the Thisayanvilai-Udankudi stretch. As the driver tried to escape with the vehicle, the police chased it for a distance only to find the mini lorry being abandoned at Madaththu Achchampaadu with the contraband.

Four killed in accidents

SALEM: Four persons were killed and a girl was injured in two different road accidents in the district on Sunday.

In an accident at Karuppur, Archunan (40) of Jagir Ammapalayam and his wife Vijaya (35) were killed on the spot when a lorry dashed against the motorcycle in which they were riding. Their daughter Vanitha sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital. The Omalur police have registered a case.

In another accident in Sankagiri, Subramaniam and Sengodan, residents of Allinaickanpalayam, sustained serious injuries when a goods autorickshaw hit their motorcycle. They were given first aid at the Sankagiri Government Hospital and then rushed to the Erode Government Hospital. But they died on the way to the hospital.

Motorcycle rally

SALEM: The Helmet Club organised a motorcycle rally to create awareness among two-wheeler riders about the importance of wearing helmets here on Sunday.

A release said Dr. Joseph Paul of Shanmuga Hospital flagged off the rally at Four Roads. Club members wearing helmets participated in the rally, which concluded at Collectorate after passing through important roads in the city. They also distributed handbills carrying information on road safety rules.

Boy drowns

ATTUR: A schoolboy drowned in the Swetha River in Veerahanur near here recently.

The police said Prabakaran (14) of Lathuvadi village, studying in a government middle school, was taking bath in the river, when he drowned. The Veerahanur police registered a case.

Reviews works

Krishnagiri: The Estimate Committee of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday reviewed the progress of various development works taken up by the Public Works Department and Department of Rural Development.

Last date

Krishnagiri: Private candidates who have failed to apply for Standard VIII public examinations scheduled to be held in December can apply under a special entry scheme till November 24. A Collectorate release said that applications were available at the office of the Regional Deputy Director of Government Examinations, Coimbatore. The candidates should pay a sum of Rs. 500 in addition to the examination fees of Rs. 125.

The examination fees should be remitted through challan in any of the Government treasuries and the copy should be enclosed with the application form.

The candidates should have completed 12-and-a-half years of age as on December 4, 2006. The application and hall ticket should be attested by any Government gazetted officer. The forms should be submitted in person at the office of the Regional Deputy Director of Government Examinations, Coimbatore, on or before November 24, 2006.

Applications received through courier or post and those received after the last date would be rejected, the release said.

Youth gets lifer for murder

PUDUKOTTAI: The Judge of Fast Track Court Judge here on Monday convicted and sentenced a youth to undergo life sentence in a murder case.

According to the prosecution, Syed Ibrahim (21) stabbed Gopuraja (22) following a wordy duel. Gopuraja succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred at Chinnappa Nagar here on March 25, 1999.

The Ganesh Nagar police registered a case and arrested Syed Ibrahim. The Judge, S. Udhayan, who found Syed Ibrahim guilty, convicted him to undergo imprisonment. The Judge also slapped a fine of Rs.5,000, in default to undergo six months' rigorous imprisonment.

Man sets wife afire

Tiruchi: The Musiri police have registered a case against a 32-year-old man after he allegedly set his wife afire following a verbal duel in their house at Velloor near Musiri on Saturday.

Revathy, who sustained burns, has been admitted to the Government Hospital here.

A quarrel broke out between Revathy and her husband, Ravi and in the melee the latter poured kerosene on the woman and set her afire.

The complaint was lodged on Sunday.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.82 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Monday.

The inflow was 13,049 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
