ELURU: Mary Ravindranath, Chairperson, Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission, on Monday caused a flutter during her visit to the city on Monday by slapping a person allegedly involved in a case of sexual harassment. Ms. Ravindranath grew furious when a victim of sexual harassment V. Vijayalalitha of Kothapet in the city complained to her at the women's police station. Ms. Ravindranath asked the police to produce before her accused person Bonthu Ramesh, a flower vendor in the same locality. During the course of `interrogation,' Ms. Ravindranath slapped the accused person. Later, she expressed her displeasure over a male Sub-Inspector heading the women's police station. and directed the Superintendent of Police to appoint a woman SI immediately. Asking the police to ensure judicious use of Section 498-A in cases of dowry harassment, she highlighted the need for involvement of counsellors to put in maximum efforts in restoring harmony in the estranged families and there by reunite them. She wanted the Women and Child Welfare Department authorities to post family counsellors at the women police stations to ensure their timely intervention in resolving family disputes amicably.
