TAMBARAM : The acute shortage of doctors and paramedical staff at the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital, more popularly known as the Chromepet GH, will soon be addressed according to S. Kumar, Joint Director of Health Services of Kancheepuram district. Pointing out that the hospital never faced a shortage of medicines, the official however conceded that the doctor strength in the hospital was based on the number of patients visiting the hospital and that had remained unchanged for 15 years. The hospital received 1,200 patients on an average everyday, and it ought to have at least 24 doctors, he said. But the strength was only 15 and a sizable number of them also visited nearby health centres of Kancheepuram district, including Kelambakkam, Sriperumbudur and Guduvanchery and hence there was a shortage of doctors. Enough number of doctors and para-medical staff would be appointed in the hospital soon, Dr. Kumar said. He was responding to a question from reporters on shortage of doctors and paramedical staff at the hospital after taking part in a blood donation camp at the hospital. E. Karunanidhi, Pallavaram Municipal Chairman and Anandha Kumari, Chief Medical Officer of the Hospital, were also present on the occasion. The official also said the Centre had allotted Rs. 1.5 crore for construction of a new Accident and Emergency Ward inside the hospital premises. The amount sanctioned was only for building construction, and the State government had appealed to the Centre to allow it to utilise 20 per cent of the sum for purchase of equipment and other facilities. Such a ward was crucial as the hospital received a large of number of accident cases throughout the year. When pointed out that a trauma care centre built some time ago at a cost of Rs. 85 lakh was being unused due to a lack of equipment and facilities, Dr. Kumar said the ward would get equipment soon.
