Bangalore: Twenty-five years in the service of classical music will be recognised when the Bangalore Gayana Samaja Centenary Award is presented next month to the Samaja's president H. Kamalanath.

The samaja established in 1905 is one of the oldest in the region and in the pre-centenary year, created a record by organising 150 special programmes by veteran and young artistes.

The centenary celebrations were inaugurated last year by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a lover of classical music.

The Gayana Samaja Centenary Award is presented to eminent persons with several decades of association with the organisation and who have contributed to promoting classical music and dance. The artists who have been honoured include: Gangubai Hangal (Hindustani vocal), R.K. Srikantan (Carnaric vocal), Pandit Ravishankar (sitar), Vyjayanthimala (Bharatanatyam), Vellore Ramabhadran (mrudangam), D.K. Pattammal (Carnatic Vocal), Lalgudi G. Jayaraman (Violin), Yamini Krishnamurthy (Dance) and Nokkala Chinna Sathyanarayana (Caranatic vocal).

Mr. Kamalanath has been associated with the Gayana Samaja for 25 years and has been its president for 20 years.

Because of his broad outlook and service to all fine arts without regional or linguistic considerations, he has been able to bring eminent artists from all parts of the country to perform in Bangalore.

The samaja's modern auditorium with its excellent acoustics is the result of his efforts, music lovers say.

The Gayana Samrajya magazine edited by him has brought a lot of goodwill to the organisation .
