Gains for Congress, NCP in civic polls

  • Kadam quits as Leader of Opposition in Assembly

MUMBAI : The Shiv Sena was shocked at Khed in the Konkan, the hometown of its leader Ramdas Kadam, in the civic polls.

The Sena had enjoyed a comfortable majority in Khed. Of the six independents in the House of 17, four belong to the breakaway Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of Raj Thackeray, nephew of the Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Owning moral responsibility for the defeat, Mr. Kadam resigned as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. While the Shiv Sena won seven seats, the Congress and the NCP won two each. The MNS won two seats in Mahad town. Preliminary trends showed that the Congress and the NCP seemed to be improving their positions though they contested most seats as rivals.
