Gujarat Vidyapith tries to rope in Gandhi's grandson

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: The board of governors of the Gujarat Vidyapith, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, has zeroed in on his grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, to take over as its chancellor.

The Vidyapith, of which Gandhiji himself was the chancellor till his assassination in 1948, had of late suffered in standard and reputation due to internal squabbles and instability. Several chancellors were changed due to ill-health and a couple of vice-chancellors resigned in the wake of controversies.

The board decided to request Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi to accept the post. It hoped that the association of a Gandhian could help improve the image of the institution. A formal appointment would be made only if Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi, son of Devdas Gandhi, accepted the request, a spokesman of the Vidyapith said here on Tuesday.
