Custody death: panel sitting on November 25, 26

Thiruvananthapuram: The Rajendra Babu Commission, which is probing the custodial deaths and other atrocities in various police stations and jails between April 1 and September 16 this year, will start its official functioning from November 24.

The commission would hold its first sitting on November 25 and 26 at the Thrissur PWD rest house at 10 a.m. on the death of Parameswaran of Kizhakkancherry while in the custody of the Mangalam Dam police on July 22. The commission would hold hearing on November 27 and 28 on the deaths of Riaz and Jalaluddin who were drowned in the Bharatapuzha while being chased by the Tirur police on August 12. The two were part of a card playing gang when the police arrived on the scene. The hearing would be held in the conference hall of the Malappuram District Collector from 10 a.m. The third hearing would be held at the same venue on the death of Leon Raju who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 28. Leon Raju was arrested on July 1 by the Kuttipuram police and was remanded to the Perinthalmanna sub jail by the Tirur Judicial First Class Magistrate.

The commission has invited interested parties, organisations and those who have already been issued notice to provide evidence during the hearings related to the above three cases. There are 14 custodial-related cases that was brought within the ambit of the commission's probe. The commission was asked to submit its report within three months.

The series of custodial and other related deaths led to a hue and cry, with the Opposition making it a campaign point. The ruling LDF, particularly Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan came under fire for the custody-related deaths.
