Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that his Government had planned to seek enhanced allocations for the development of fisheries and for fishermen's welfare in the XI Plan (2007-2012) from the Centre. Felicitating fishermen on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day celebration organised by the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare here on Tuesday, the Chief Minster said that in the present five-year plan as much as Rs.21 crore was allotted and in the next five-year plan the Government would urge the Centre to earmark more funds. Stating that the Union Territory was producing around 44,000 tons of fish now, the Chief Minister said that the administration had planned to provide amenities and equipment to the fishermen to increase fish production here.
Welfare schemes
Mr. Rangasamy, who distributed walkie-talkies on the occasion to fishermen and benefits of various welfare schemes operated by the department, said that fishermen families, who lost houses in the tsunami, would be extended assistance ranging from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs.2.30 lakh for the construction of their houses. The Revenue Department had identified the families and the administration had sought assistance from the World Bank. Education and Fisheries Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who presided, said that a corporation would be started soon to meet the financial requirements of the fishermen. The Government would also start a training institute and construct fishing harbours in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. Speaker of the Puducherry Assembly R. Radhakrishnan, Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss, legislators R. Viswnathan (Communist Party of India), K. Lakshmianrayanan (PMC), A. Anbalagan (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Congress), M. Kandasamy (Congress), K.R. Anandaraman (PMK) and Director of the department M. Ramalakshmi were among those who spoke on the occasion.
