Friedman & Rajaji

The sad news of the passing away of U.S. economist Milton Friedman brings to memory his calling on C. Rajagopalachari in Chennai long before he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics. The eminent professor recorded as follows in The Rajaji-93 Souvenir, published by T. Sadasivam of Kalki and released by Acharya Vinoba Bhave on December 8, 1971, from his Pounar Ashram: "One of the great emotional and intellectual experiences of my life was a visit to Mr. C. Rajagopalachari when I was visiting in India some years ago. It was exciting to find a man with such philosophical depth, emotional concern, and analytical clarity about the problems facing India. It revealed to me an aspect of Indian culture and intellectual life that had been a closed book before."

K. Vedamurthy,
Chennai
