Marykom leads India's charge

NEW DELHI : Two-time World champion M.C. Marykom led India to a fantastic outing that confirmed at least eight medals for the host in the 4th World women's boxing championship at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

Though Marykom won her pinweight category quarterfinal against Chandrika Guruge of Sri Lanka with a RSC in the second round, it was Jenny R.L. (63kg), K.C. Lekha (75kg), and Renu (80kg) who caught the spectators' imagination by blowing away their opponents.

India lost just one bout on Tuesday when Kalpana Choudhary (48kg)went down to Yesica Bopp of Argentina.

Chhotu Loura (50kg), L. Sarita Devi (52kg) and N. Usha (57kg) won their quarterfinal rounds with grit. Usha started as an underdog against Ingrid Egner (Norway) and both went into defensive from the start without a point being scored for one full minute. Usha connected well in the third round to win 11-5.

48kg: Yesica Bopp (Arg) bt Kalpana Choudhary (Ind) RSC (OS) II, Alice Kate (Phi) bt Wensi Huang (Chn) 15-9, Marlen Esparz (U.S.) bt Jenny Hardingz (Swe) RSC (OS) II, Ri Jong Hyang (PRK) bt Monika Csik (Hun) 15-6.

50kg: Chhotu Loura (Ind) bt Eun A Jang (Kor) RSC (OS) II, Hasibe Erkoc (Tur) bt Kim Hyang Ok (PRK) 11-7, Siyuan Li (Chn) bt Victoria Usatchenko (Rus) 22-6, Fadia Ldrissi (Den) bt Nilimini Jayasinghe (Sri) 29-17.

52kg: L. Sarita Devi (Ind) bt Maarit Teuronen (Fin) 22-11, Samiha Hassan (Egy) bt Saliha Ouchen (Fra) RSC (OS) II, Jagoda Karge (Pol) bt Maire Bentson (Nzl) 22-21, Viktoria Rudenko (Ukr) bt Gulnara Azizova (Kaz) 36-16.

57kg: Yum Kum Ju (PRK) bt Zsuzsanna Szukina (Hun) 16-2, Bin Wu (Chn) bt Munkhjargal Ganbold (Mng) 24-7, N. Usha (Ind) bt Ingrid Egner (Nor) 11-5, Mihaela Cijevschi (Rom) bt Nagehan Gul (Tur) 20-7.

60kg: Anabella Farias (Arg) bt Niluka Karunaratne (Sri) RSC (OS) II, Mitchel Martinez (Phi) bt Lucie Bertaud (Fra) 23-10, Tatiana Chalaya (Rus) bt Malene Neilsen (Den) 29-19, Katie Taylor (Ire) bt Florina Popa (Rom) RSC (OS) II.

63kg: Jenny R.L. (Ind) bt Celeste Peralta (Arg) RSC (OS) I, Kathleen Dunn (Can) bt Saida Gasanova (Ukr) 33-19, Yulia Nemetsova (Rus) bt Elizabeth Quevedo (U.S.) 12-6, Klara Svensson (Swe) bt Kinga Siwa (Pol) 31-12.
