PUDUKOTTAI: The district administration will initiate steps to supply free diesel-operated motor under the infrastructure development component of the Sampoorna Gramin Swarojgar Yojana, to self-help groups in quarries to pump out rainwater from their mines, the Collector, S. J. Chiru, said.

"Float quarry clusters"

Mr. Chiru called upon the SHG members to float quarry clusters and form cluster-level federations to enhance their profitability by availing themselves of various infrastructure development programmes available with the DRDA.

It has been planned to purchase a stone-crusher as part of infrastructure development to benefit the quarry SHGs.

He appealed to the mine workers to abide by the rules and regulations governing the mines and minerals.

The Project Officer, DRDA, A. Natarajan, said the workshop aimed at creating awareness of schemes being implemented by banks, Industry Department among the members of the SHGs besides health care and first aid techniques.

Training would also be imparted on maintenance of accounts and registers.

Health camp

An exclusive health camp would be held in course of time to benefit the women members of the SHGs.

A `First Aid' kit would be supplied to all the existing 41 quarry SHGs.

The Secretary of the DSMS, S. Sathyaseelan said that there was a growing demand for the gravel available in and around Kunnandarkoil in adjoining districts especially Tiruvarur.

The DSMS would also take steps to widen the market for the cut-stone slabs available in Panankudi and Narthamalai.

Stone quarry would be leased out to 12 new SHGs in Viralimalai, Tirumayam, Kunnandarkoil and Annavasal blocks, he said.
