KARAIKAL : Modernisation of police force in the Union Territory was on the cards and the Centre had sanctioned funds for this purpose, said Chief Minister N. Rangasamy here on Sunday. Inaugurating the "Coastal Police Station" in Karaikal, Mr. Rangasamy said that the law and order situation in the Union Territory was satisfactory and pointed out that the station in Karaikal was opened as first among the two sanctioned by the Centre. The second one would be inaugurated in Puducherry shortly, the Chief Minister added. The Chief Minister pointed out that the police station would look into the problems of fishermen in Karaikal district. Earlier, the Chief Minister handed over 65 permanent houses to the tsunami survivors at Poovam, a coastal hamlet near Karaikal. Besides, a primary school and and an anganwadi were also opened . The Chief Minister, addressing a function after unveiling the statue of E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker at the Kamarajar Square here, said that the Puducherry Government would consider the request of A.M.H. Nazeem, leader of the Opposition, to provide financial assistance to the Tamil feature film on Periyar, which had been under production in Tamil Nadu. He said that the statues of Anna and Kamaraj would be installed soon in Karaikal. He said that the Government was willing to lend a helping hand to the sick co-operative units and urged the employees to contribute for the betterment of the co-operative movement. K. Sudhir Kumar, District Collector, Kishan Kumar, IG of Police, Puducherry, M. Ramadoss, MP, Legislators, A.M.H. Nazeem, Omalingam, Ganapathy, Siva and Marimuthu, participated.
