Narendra Singh Tomar and Satyanarayan Jatia in Bhopal on Tuesday.
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Narendra Singh Tomar, was on Tuesday unanimously elected as the new president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the State. Party general secretary Om Prakash Mathur made the announcement at a meeting of delegates held at the State party headquarters here. Addressing party leaders and delegates after the formal announcement of his election, Mr. Tomar spelt out his priorities and said it would be his endeavour to "reach out where we do not have a base". "The party organisation and the State Government are accountable to the people," he said, adding that his doors would always remain open to the public. "It is necessary for leaders to be fully aware of the people's problems so that the party organisation can take up issues confronting the public with those at the helm of the State Government and if necessary bring about important policy changes at that level," he said, adding that "the target is to see that Madhya Pradesh becomes a developed State." Defining the task before him, Mr. Tomar said that on the one hand people would have to be informed of "failures" of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, especially the challenge posed by rising prices and terrorism, and on the other they would have to reach out to the people at the grassroots level to tell them about the development initiatives of the BJP Government in the State.
