dated November 22, 1956: Questions to UK, France

The UN Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, has asked Britain, France and Israel why they had failed to withdraw their land forces from Egypt in accordance with the General Assembly's resolutions. Mr. Hammarskjoeld, in his report to the world body, has accepted several of the conditions, laid down by Egypt for the international force. He considers that UN forces should not remain long in the Suez Canal zone after the Anglo-French forces have withdrawn. He has also accepted the Egyptian interpretation that the international force should not have, as its mission, the ensuring of free navigation in the canal.
