KANNUR: As many as 21 inmates in the Central Jail here are preparing for the SSLC and higher secondary examinations. A team of jail staff, led by a jail teacher and jail welfare officers, as well as fellow prisoners are assisting the inmates to appear for the coming SSLC and Plus One examinations.

Of the 21 inmates, 13 will appear for the SSLC examination and eight for the higher secondary examination.

Jail teacher J. Lawrence, who is leading the efforts to prepare the prisoners for the examinations, said that the inmates who had enrolled for appearing for the SSLC examinations included a prisoner sentenced to death and nine life-term prisoners. Six life-term prisoners are among those preparing for Plus One examination, he said.

All the 10 inmates who appeared for the SSLC examination in March 2006 passed and three of them secured first class and the rest obtained second class.

Eight of them are now appearing for the higher secondary examination.

The All Kerala Distributors Association district unit provided study materials for the inmates and paid the registration fee, Mr. Lawrence said adding that Labour India Publications were sending study magazines to them every month free of cost.

Jail Welfare Officers Sunil Kumar, K. Lakshmi and G. Biju and fellow prisoners Vijayakumar, Joshi Kurian, Devarajan, C.A. Pius and Gopinathan Nair are guiding the inmates in their studies. Spoken English classes and equivalent literacy classes are also being conducted in the jail.
