Special Correspondent

FRIENDS OF FARMERS: Students of the Vasavadatta Vidya Mandir explaining the "Masala Mitti" at a village in Sedam taluk of Gulbarga district.

GULBARGA: Students of the Vasavadatta Vidya Vihar Mandir in Sedam have brought laurels to the school by getting through the tough competition in the State-level Science Congress and qualifying to present their innovative project called "Masala Mitti" at the 14th National Children Science Congress.

School principal Neeta Purohit, told The Hindu here on Monday that the State-level Science Congress, which was held in Chikmagalur, had received 300 entries.

The school had qualified for participation in the National Children Science Congress for the second time.

The students - M. Sudheer, Sushrutha Marla, Priyank, Aditya Kulkarni and Pratik Kulkarni — had come out with an innovative preparation of "Masala Mitti", ingeniously using the leguminous post harvest residues, cattle urine and cattle dung. They were guided by teachers Sulochana Reddy and Dalwayi. At the State- level science congress, "Masala Mitti" stole the limelight and the visitors and judges evinced keen interest on how the formula worked in the fields and how it could replace the conventional farming methods.

The laboratory trials of the "Masala Mitti" proved that the percentage of primary nutrients such as NPK was more in the combination worked out by the students compared to the vermin compost and the farmyard manure, which was fast gaining acceptance among farmers.

Prior to sending the project for the science congress, the team had used the "Masala Mitti" at some villages in Sedam and proved the cost effectiveness.
