CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday accused Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi of trying to appease the Left on the Mullaperiyar issue. In a statement here, she flayed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for not condemning the protest demonstration staged by some activists during the recent visit of Public Works Minister Durai Murugan to the dam site in Kerala. Ms.Jayalalithaa said the all-party meeting convened by Kerala Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan had adopted a resolution ruling out the possibility of raising the water level to 142 feet. It showed his plan "to scuttle the move to raise the water level by all means." As there was heavy inflow now, the Tamil Nadu Government could resort to steps to raise the water level to 142 feet, she said. But, Mr.Karunanidhi was "reluctant" to do so and wanted to satisfy the CPI(M) with a view to averting a crisis to the "minority" State Government and the one at the Centre. The talks between the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala slated for November 29 would not serve the interests of farmers of the five southern districts. There was no alternative other than implementing the Supreme Court's direction, she added.
