CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for taking precautionary measures against future flood damages and to carry out repair works for damages caused by floods in the last two years in the State immediately. The Chief Minister, who reviewed the progress of various projects being implemented by the Water Resources and Building organisations of the Public Works Department here on Tuesday, directed the officials to release water for irrigation from schemes which had been completed in the last six months and complete the rest of the on-going schemes before the end of the current financial year. The Chief Minister wanted the officials to expedite the Rs. 2,500-crore World Bank-funded schemes for modernising and upgrading 8,326 tanks in the State. The progress of schemes being implemented at a cost of Rs. 9 crore for taking up flood protection works in Chennai City and in Tiruchi also came under review. The Chief Minister wanted to know the status of various projects in water resources and buildings organisations, worth Rs. 749 crore, sanctioned in the current year's budget. To provide permanent relief against flood damages in Chennai city, Tiruchi, Perambalur and Nagapattinam districts schemes were being prepared by the PWD at a cost of Rs. 860 crore. Another scheme worth Rs. 295 crore for diverting floodwater from Tiruchi to Pudukottai was also under preparation. The Chief Minister wanted the PWD to expedite these schemes with the assistance of NABARD and Central Government, according to an official press release.
