CHENNAI: Public Works Minister Durai Murugan on Tuesday questioned the rationale behind the decision of an all-party meeting convened by the Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in Thiruvanthapuram on Monday, to press the demand for a new dam on the Mullaperiyar. ``Where is the need for any new dam when the existing dam is safe? The conclusion regarding the safety of the dam is not my finding but that of technical experts, who were asked by the Central Water Commission to go into the issue," he told The Hindu. The assessment of the technical experts had been accepted by the Commission and the Supreme Court. Recalling that work on strengthening the dam was carried out over the years by spending crores of rupees, the Minister wondered where was the need for the exercise if a new dam were to be built. The proposal for another dam was studied by engineers of the two States 25 years ago, when the issue of safety was raised. They concluded that such a proposal was not feasible he added.
