Table Tennis
ALAPPUZHA: After a day of drama and suspense, the Andhra Pradesh cadet girls' team was disqualified from the National sub-junior table tennis championship here on Tuesday after one of its players, Zeba Arshiya, admitted that she was overaged. It began with Kerala lodging a protest against Zeba after the host lost a close league match against Andhra. A managers' meeting was called on Monday to discuss the overage issue. And the players were given two options: to withdraw voluntarily or face a medical examination.
The letters
Zeba first gave a letter that she was withdrawing from the championship. Later, she gave another letter that her date of birth was correct and that she was willing to take a medical test. But when she was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning, she admitted that was overaged, gave it in writing to the organisers, and withdrew from the championship. With Zeba being found overaged, the Table Tennis Federation of India decided to scratch AP from the cadet girls' event and Kerala, which finished second in the group, advanced to the quarterfinals. Nine other players, who were also suspected of being overaged, were asked to undergo a medical examination. Principal Correspondent
